Yes, the title of this article is a clich?, but it is a realistic title for major problem. Our society has developed a horrible tendency, we put labels on individuals because of the jobs they do. Is there anyone who wants the title of “used car salesman”. Yet, hundred’s of thousands of used cars are bought and sold every year, a sales person that sells used cars is not necessarily a liar or unscrupulous just because that is their job and they do it well.

Lawyers – does anyone, other than another lawyer have anything good to say about another lawyer? Yet, our freedoms and personal protection are provided by the legal system that they work within.

If I had a nickel for every used car salesman or lawyer joke, I would be a very wealthy individual.

• All athletes are on steroids,
• All politicians are corrupt,
• All policemen take graft,
• All trades people rip you off,
• All truck drivers are drunks,
• All stock brokers are swindlers,
• All blue collar works are low life.

This is just a small sample of the employment labels that society has so unjustly condemned the hundred’s of thousands of honest, hardworking individuals who are employed in these jobs or professions. As the old saying goes, “it only takes one bad apple to spoil the batch”.

Recently, a woman told me that she and her husband were contemplating getting a food concession trailer. She wanted to know the best way to go about getting into the business, but as well, she was very concerned because her friends and family were telling her that they would become “carnie bums”.

To all of the thousands of individuals who organize and work at festivals and fairs throughout North America and around the world, who entertain, feed, and supply products and services to the attendees, I wonder what their reaction is to being called a “carnie bum”. The label is insulting to everyone involved. Now, I am not naive enough to think that everyone who works in this market is a candidate for saint hood, but, I traveled the circuit for many years and I have met some of the nicest, kindest, and friendliest people; people who would bend over backwards to help and support you; people who I am proud to say I now count amongst my friends.

Part of the problem is the media and entertainment industries who take the worst actions of an individual and highlight them, implying they represent a group – anything to grab a reader’s or viewer’s attention.

However, that is not the only reason why job labels exist. We, individually have to take a lot of the responsibility, because we use the job labels when talking to others, we use them in front of our children, passing along unwarranted and unjustified prejudices, in many cases without considering the implications and injustices that we are doing.

Next time you are speaking about an individual and are going to use a derogatory job label - think before you speak. Unless, of course, you don’t mind carrying the label that others have placed on your occupation.
