There's an article in the New York Sun entitled "Heroes and Cowards" and written by Alicia Colon. The author sites a Department of Defense website which details the total military dead in the Iraq war between 2003 and this month. It now stands at about 3,133. One paragraph reads: "This is tragic, as are all deaths due to war, and we are facing a cowardly enemy unlike any other in our past that hides behind innocent citizens. Each death is blazoned in the headlines of newspapers and Internet sites. What is never compared is the number of military deaths during the Clinton administration: 1,245 in 1993; 1,109 in 1994; 1,055 in 1995; 1,008 in 1996. That's 4,417 deaths in peacetime but, of course, who's counting?"

As radio talkshow host, Rush Limbaugh said recently on his show, "There's a Department of Defense pdf file on death rates that you can download. The point here is, of course these 4,417 deaths between 1993 and 1996, those are deaths in peacetime, those are for the most part accidental deaths. There were more deaths in four years of the Clinton administration due to military accidents than deaths in Iraq. If you look at this pdf, you will find that in 1980, which was the last year of the Carter administration, there were far more military deaths in 1980 than in any year of the Bush administration. The death rate was also higher, and that's because of differences in the care given the training and standards and so forth. The point here is that we're fighting the Iraq war with lower casualties than casualties expected from training accidents during peacetime. Any journalist can go to the Department of Defense site and take a look and find these numbers. There is no interest on the part of any journalist to do so, because it would confound the agenda and the purpose of tallying up these deaths because these 3,133 deaths form the basis, do they not, of "We've got to get out of there! This is out of control, why, 3,133 battlefield deaths, whoa, this is horrible! We support the troops. We gotta get 'em out of harm's way in a pointless, unjust war," blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, when in fact this war is rather successful in terms of the number of deaths, especially when you compare it to the number of troops who have been deployed."

It amazes me that, according to a news show I was watching last night, a full 50% of all the TV news stories had something to do with Anna Nicole Smith's suicide story. Who knows how many we've heard about Britney "Sheers." It seems to me that the ONLY stories having to do with the War on Terror have to do with suicide bombings and American soldiers who've been killed.

My brother-in-law just returned to my sister in Germany from Iraq yesterday. He's a Colonel in the U.S. Army and was serving as Brigade Commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division (1st AD), based in Friedberg, Germany. They were stationed in Ramadi where some of the war's heaviest fighting took place. I just read an article in the Stars and Stripes where he was quoted, and it outlined one victorious situation after another taking place that was not only greatly encouraging but was also certainly newsworthy stuff, in my humble opinion...but I've never heard or read this anywhere else. The Feb 17th article opened with this: "After eight long months of heated, block-to-block combat in one of Iraq's deadliest cities, U.S. troops have broken a years-long stalemate between coalition forces, local insurgents and Islamic militants, according to the departing coalition commander." It went on to say: "The signs of progress include the appointment of a mayor; the creation from scratch of a 4,500-strong Iraqi police force; a 50 percent drop in mortar, rocket and roadside bomb attacks; and, perhaps most significant, a complete reversal of relations between U.S. troops and local tribes.Initially, the brigade counted two local tribes that were friendly toward the unit and a dozen who were openly hostile and supportive of the insurgency. Today, those numbers are reversed....When 1st AD troops arrived in Ramadi, roughly two-thirds of the city was controlled by insurgents, particularly the south-central portion. It was a phenomenon veteran infantry commanders found almost unimaginable."

Let's keep the wartime casualties in perspective and take a look at the murders that take place over here in "peaceful America" while the war is going on "over there."

CASUALTIES OF PEACE

A January 31 Reuters article reported that 406 homicides occurred in Philadelphia - the City of Brotherly Love - in 2006. And that's not the worst of 'em!

There are over 16,000 murders committed in the "peaceful" USA every year. AND THE CRIME RATE IS DOWN FROM PREVIOUS YEARS! We average around 44.5 murders every day in the United States for the past three years according to Federal Government statistics. Unbelievably, US military forces have a better chance of being killed here at home than they do in Iraq. Add to that some 42,600+ deaths in auto accidents which occur annually, not counting serious injuries.

Let's not forget the nearly 4500 unborn babies who are murdered legally in the U.S. by one of the various forms of abortion available to their mothers.

Point is, a thinking person has to wonder why it is that all we ever hear reported about the war effort has to do with Americans being killed. The facts reveal that it's safer to be a combat soldier than a civilian...or an unborn child. Home of the brave? I'll say...bearing these statistics in mind, it takes great courage just to walk outside every morning.
