So often we see men at the forefront of human endeavors involving debate, but why? Why do men love to debate? Is it a throw back from days gone by in human evolution, which provides this intense innate need for physical acts of challenge and yet still to this day it is seen in sporting competition, business, war and politics?

Does the human male derive physical pleasure in competition and release chemicals in the brain during debate, similar to a sporting match against an opponent? Is political debate tied so close to challenge that it drives men to its front doors?

In scientific debate there is still lots of politics and infighting about research and theories and one must defend their work to their peers and in the proper domain to be even taken seriously; a little bit of ladder climbing there too. And isn’t it the same in business as well. So are these people fighting with their ideas and minds because they cannot joust with swords, claws, lances or modern day weaponry.

As the operator of an Online Think Tank, I find the whole thing quite fascinating indeed. In fact one Think Tank participant recently said that they promise to be; much more aggressive at challenging my opinions. Of course in true Alpha Male form, I had to reply;

But really, that is not the point. The point is in the dialogue to come to a new thought, original concept or revolutionary idea. So, I wait for you to come up with a new idea, perspective, point of view or even an additional argument that has not yet been considered or an alternate plan to solve a problem.

Somehow challenge is something that the mind enjoys isn’t it. And in a Think Tank it is often fun to watch the debate and participate in the sound and fury even if you understand in the end it is all for not and the goal is to reach a solution to a given problem. So, as they say; Bring it On!

Not only is debate a necessary skill to have in belligerent human societies, but you need to hone those skills to survive at times. "Do not mistake my acts of kindness for a sign of weakness?" was the battle cry, as concepts were pondered, as well as solutions to mankind’s greatest challenges. Perhaps this article will propel thought into 2007.
