In relationships, some rules will never change.

Rule #1: You have to treat each other with respect.

Public put-downs, degrading comments, and treating the other partner as an unequal subordinate are not acceptable. Two people who are in a relationship are equals and owe each other equal respect.

Rule #2: Violence is unacceptable. This goes for women as well. Movies and TV shows today still make the mistake of showing women slapping men for their verbal inappropriateness, and while the verbal abuse or molestation is not acceptable either, hands on to another human being is totally out of line – and in fact, illegal.

Partners who treat each other with violence, no matter whether it’s the male or female, are acting out behaviors that need counseling. Staying in such a relationship is unwise, and unsafe.

Rule #3: Show support. Couple don’t always have to agree with each other, but they have to honor the other partner’s right to hold that opinion and they must support the partner’s right to follow through. Disagreeing, even publicly, with a partner’s ideas does not mean you are not supportive. Networking ...Not as Scary as It Sounds

Rule #4: Trust is never going to change as one of the most important relationship rules. Without trust there is no love. Trust creates the companionship that people must have from each other to grow old together and build a bond that gives each other security, stability and peace. The idea of “open marriage,” for example, is no marriage at all. In such a situation the trust is gone, and in today’s AIDS and STD-ridden world, lack of trustworthiness in a relationship can be deadly.

Rule #5: Disagree without being destructive. Arguments, even heated ones, occur between people who love and like each other. They must not denigrate into name calling, hurtful accusations and dwelling on past wounds. They should be constructive, talking about the immediate issues and how they can be resolved. Partners who are so angry they cannot behave this way should remove themselves from the situation until they are calm.
