When I was married, I lost sight of my own self and did not even know what my “purpose” was. I was so busy focusing on my husband and wanting to spend all my time with him. I made him my “purpose” and then when my children came along I made them my “purpose”. It was as if I was not important enough to have a “purpose” of my own. I have worked with many women like myself and some men.

Knowing what our “purpose” is and moving towards it keeps us true to ourselves. It also keeps us with ourselves, separate from our loved ones. It is important to have a life together and to do things separately.

Roberto Assagioli wrote in his book, The Act of Will, “…we need to face courageously and willingly the requirements for transcending the limitations of personal consciousness, without losing the centre of individual awareness.” The ‘purpose’ needs to be seen clearly, evaluated, motives looked at and real intention put behind the ‘purpose’. Roberto Assagioli says, “…our task consists in intensifying the “potential” of the energies of good will, and understanding so that they not only neutralize the hostile drives but are stronger than they… We are, essentially and genuinely, what we will to be…”

Wallace Wattles in his book, The Science of Getting Rich, says, “You have no right to use your will power upon another person – even “for his own good” – because you do not know what is for his good… Indeed, any attempt to use your will upon others will only tend to defeat your purpose. …you need only to use your will power upon yourself. Use your mind to form a mental image of what you want and to hold that vision with faith and purpose.”

It is important to remember that we are all doing the best we can with the knowledge and experience we have. So take care of yourself, nurture yourself and be truthful to yourself. By acting in this way, you are honouring who you truly are. You are not part of your loved one. You are separate from them but a part of their life. The only time we appear to be joined is when we have intercourse, and we cannot stay like that forever; enjoyable though it might be!

Kahlil Gibran in his book The Prophet writes:

“You were born together, and together you shall be for evermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God. But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
